Mortgage stress testing

Mortgage stress test explained: what does it mean in Ireland?

A mortgage stress test asks whether the payment remains manageable if the interest rate used for affordability is higher than the initial rate.

Why lenders test higher rates

Mortgage affordability is not just about whether you can make today's payment. Lenders may assess how the household would cope with changes in interest rates and other financial commitments under their own credit policies.

A simple illustration

If a mortgage payment is calculated at 3.53%, testing the same balance at 4.53% and 5.53% shows how sensitive the payment is to higher rates. These are scenario illustrations, not a statement of any lender's exact underwriting test.
